Onset Has Lost a True Warrior, Marilyn Knowlton

Onset has lost a true warrior. Marilyn Knowlton reached out shortly after I moved to Onset over four years ago when she recognized that I shared her indignation about actions that I instinctively knew were wrong. Marilyn knew exactly what was right and wrong, and why. She and Marie Strawn entrusted me with their knowledge and historical treasure trove, and spent many hours educating me and others so that the next generation will know how and why to protect Onset from our own town government and outside forces.

In my book, there is no better legacy than to be remembered as an activist. Activists are by definition people of action who always face repercussions for their outspoken defense of what they believe in. That was Marilyn, a true activist and advocate.

When it became necessary to take legal action in 2018 against the town with respect to the lease of Onset's beach, bluffs and Bayview Park to the Buzzards Bay Coalition Marilyn left her house to come to a meeting and support the lawsuit. Although she was ill, it was vitally important to her and we needed her leadership. Her son met with the lawyers armed with Marilyn's historical documents. She was instrumental in the settlement filed in Probate Court along with the 99-year lease.

I will miss Marilyn very much, and hope to carry on in a manner that would make her proud. -Lisa Morales
